An E39 lift kit. I’d love to have an extra 2-3" lift on my 2002 520d. There are enough dirt roads around here where it would be useful.

There are other lift kits out that just seem to act as an additional spacer between the body and the suspension mounts. You can even buy a lift kit for a Mini:

I’d be intereseted in what this does to wear-n-tear on the ball joints and other bushings since it increases the angle between things like tie rods, the wheel carrier, and how they plug into the subframe.

Me too! Except it would be for my Vibe. Would like to put slightly larger and much more aggressive tires on it and us it for camping and forest road duty.

Too bad we never got the 520d wagon over here :(

New stock springs would probably give you the 2-3-inch lift you need, since springs do sag over time.

I didn’t think too much of that; the car does have 306,000 km on it, and I did replace all four shocks not so long ago. And mounts, but not the springs.

I considered doing something similar to an Octavia II Scout, but there are no kits on the market to heighten it further than stock and I wasn’t going to fab one up so I just left it. I would still quite like a 4wd lifted diesel wagon with a small A-bar and some decent side wall multi-terrain tyres on like GenGrab AT2's.

Could you fit a higher aspect ratio tire under there? Not a bad way to gain some ground clearance.

might not give you 2-3 inches, but will give you a little bit

I’m not sure it would pass inspection that way.

Jeremy clarkson would have definitely found a 5 series wagon lift key helpful during the Africa special

You can adapt a aftermarket coilover setup with taller springs. I know Ground Control offers some custom options for certain vehicles, and if you explain to them what you’re looking for, you can probably figure out a non-spacer way to do it.

I think you just invented the unibody, auto based SUV! (I’d vote not to muck with those honestly beautiful e39 wagons...)
